Choice, Consequence, and the Perfect Manicure. What If…

February 2, 2012

WHAT IF I did a big tease and didn’t wait another week to post???

Well, I’m sorry but I was traveling and I was busier than I expected. I said it was a business trip but I expected to have a lot of down time. Turns out, there was more business and less down time than I thought. Annoying.

Anyway, I think we left off with the (now final) lead in to tonight’s big “WHAT IF” episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I don’t know about you, but I can hardly sit still waiting for it.

But in the meantime, last time’s tease left me (and you, I hope) pondering some of life’s bigger questions. Like:

WHAT IF we had choices?

WHAT IF those choices had consequences?

WHAT IF the fate of the universe was hanging in the balance of YOUR choices???

Well, that’s a little deep for this blog, and the truth is, the whole truth and consequences thing came to me as I was standing in the manicure place deciding what color to choose for my pedicure.

So, I only change up the color on my toes.

For nearly 10 years I always got the same exact color on my fingernails, week in and week out. And then…they stopped making it! Apparently my weekly manicures alone were not enough to support worldwide production of Essie’s Heavenly Harp.

I suffered a major existential crisis. What if everything good that had happened in my life over the past 10 years was as a result of this color??? It didn’t matter. I had to make other choices. And sure enough, some pretty crappy things started happening in my life.

So each week I would go in and feel the weight of the world on my shoulders as I stood there trying to choose—Allure or French Francs? Montauk the End or Mademoiselle (don’t even get me started on the added pressure of having the nice manicure ladies standing there, standing there, standing there breathing fire down your neck while you’re trying to make the biggest decision of the week–don’t they get that all things good and bad for my entire week are resting on THIS DECISION???)?? Never mind that you can’t tell the difference between any of these colors. It didn’t matter how it looked; I would choose or rechoose the color based on how my last week had gone. Are you getting my point???

There were bigger things at play here! The fate of the universe rested on this decision!! At least the fate of MY universe, which, when it comes right down to it is all anyone really cares about. I mean, their own universe, not mine. Although that would be pretty cool if all anyone cared about was my universe. Or maybe not.

Anyway, my choices felt BIG!!! Because there were CONSEQUENCES!!

So maybe choosing nail polish is a little ridiculous, but never let it be said that I shy away from the ridiculous.

However, you may have noticed that in life, our choices really do have consequences. Have you ever noticed that??? And very soon your choices in a new and AWESOME book are going to have consequences too.

That’s right, I have another author with a book coming out from Coliloquy, the publisher that gives you choices while you read. But this one is totally different from the four launch books (which are awesome and why haven’t you read them yet???).

FLUID by the amazing Travis Sentell is a complete book in which your choices have consequences.

It’s a standalone interactive novel that is both the large story of a cosmic battle between God and Satan, and the small story of two lost teenagers yearning for connection in a greedy, manipulative world.

From the very first page, the reader makes critical decisions that lead to one of over 500 pathways that explore the nature of good, evil, and the fluid core of humanity. Just as in life, readers cannot go back and change their minds once a decision is made. Every choice has its repercussions; every reading experience is completely different.

HELLO, PERFECT BOOK CLUB BOOK!!!

It’s brilliant. It’s unique. And it’s coming really soon from Coliloquy. You can read more about it here.

Tell me how SHIBUMI this sounds in the comments!

  1. 500 choices. Sounds like the amount of colors that OPI nail polish offers!

  2. I love Choose Your Own Adventure Books, and this is cutting edge in terms of trends and “the next big thing.” I also think there should be genre crossovers, like steampunk dystopian or paranormal sci-fi.

Maybe we can choose a princess retelling with an alien twist? I like choices.

p.s. if you put unicorns on your ring fingers, you’ll have a much better week. Just sayin’.

  3. It does sound shibumi. More awesomeness went I went to buy Tawna’s Getting Dumped ($1.99 on Amazon right now – what a steal!). It’s #4 in the Kindle store but in a very, very specific category:

    #4 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Nonfiction > Lifestyle & Home > Puzzles & Games > Role Playing & Fantasy

I thought, “Role Playing & Fantasy” (okay, kind of kinky maybe). Then I followed the breadcrumb back to “Puzzles & Games” (interactive content, got it), Lifestyle & Home (lifestyle choice of working at a dump? all right, I’m still with you), and then finally went Huh! at “Nonfiction.” I want that cataloging job.

  4. There’s SHIBUMI all over that sucker. It’s been utterly SHIBUMIFIED. Love the good/evil thing with no second chances and no going back. SHIBIMI CITY!

I can’t believe you consider your choice of polish to be anything less than existential. The tone of your entire week rests on your nail enamel. Take it lightly, you must not.

I wanted to send you a picture of my favorite pedi from last summer but couldn’t figure out how. Black polish, white squigglies and a touch of red (for class). Pretty yummy for a grandma.

  6. As a writer of interactive fiction, most of my tween books have between 15-25 different endings. My mind boggled at the thought of diagramming and plotting 500…along with the philosophy that went with them! Will I read this book? I’m not sure. Religion can be so difficult to deal with! I definitely applaud the author and Coliloquy on this one, though!

  7. How on earth do you write a book like that?

  8. I think that its about time we started seeing something new! Its been the same generic stuff for so long, nearly every book I pick up has virtualy the same story line, I’m excited to read this! Let’s hope that there will continue to be more original books being published. And that writers keep pushing the bar higher, fed up with mushy emo teen love drama! Let’s become more original!

  9. What’s the status of A. J. Menden’s THE GIRL WITH THE GRANITE HEART? Last I heard, it was scheduled for release in December 2011, but it never eventuated. And are any more of the author’s works out on submission? (I’ve already read PHENOMENAL GIRL 5 and TEKGRRL, and have SORCERESS INTERRUPTED on my wishlist.)

    • SORCERESS INTERRUPTED is available online. Not sure yet about the 4th. Keep an eye on her blog for updates. Glad you’re a fan. That’s a fun series. 🙂
